Leh India

Leh, a high desert city in the Himalayas, is the capital of the Leh region in the state of Jammy and Kashmir in northern India. It was originally a commercial caravan stop and is famous for its Buddhist sites and the nearby hiking areas. The huge palace of Leh of the seventeenth century, designed according to the old house of the Dalai Lama (the Potala Palace in Tibet), overlooks the bazaar of the ancient city and its labyrinthine streets. With panoramic views from a peak over the city, Namgyal Tsemo is a monastery dating from about 1430 with a gold-plated Buddha statue. Also known for its views is Shanti Stupa, a contemporary Buddhist shrine with a white spire. Other monasteries in the area include Thikse, a group of buildings at different levels of the slopes with Tibetan shrines, statues and other pieces of art. South of Leh, the Indus River and its tributary the Zanskar River are known for the descent of rapids in runs through spectacular gorges. Hiking expeditions reach great heights in the Indus Valley area, including the Khardung La Pass at 5,359 m.
